As Queensland races towards a greener future, Uber has launched an innovative pilot program that offers drivers in Brisbane and the Gold Coast the opportunity to purchase or finance a second-hand electric vehicle (EV). The initiative allows drivers to finance an EV for as little as $124 per week, a move that’s set to accelerate the region’s shift to sustainable transport.

In the last 12 months, Queensland has witnessed a 47% surge in EV registrations bringing the total to 46,323. With recent demand for EV purchases paired with Uber’s pilot announcement, there’s a growing need for innovative solutions to support EV infrastructure — one of which comes from a startup based right here at The Precinct.

David Nyambuya, founder of EV Charging Australia and a member of The Precinct’s Landing Pad, expressed his excitement about the initiative:

“Australia still has a long way to go in supporting the infrastructure and investment needed for widespread electric vehicle adoption, but it’s encouraging to see Uber taking a proactive role in reducing carbon emissions. My team at EV Charging Australia is gearing up to meet the anticipated increase in demand for EV consulting, software, and hardware solutions,” Nyambuya said.

EV Charging Australia offers both fixed and mobile electric vehicle charging solutions nationwide. The company initially focused on providing Australia’s first fast mobile EV charging service to support the growing number of EVs on the road. Their team specialises in designing and testing products tailored to Australia’s unique landscape, with plans to expand local manufacturing of EV solutions.

As a member of The Precinct’s Landing Pad, Nyambuya benefits from access to a large network of mentors and investors as well as business support workshops.

“In the next six months, we’re focusing on scaling our operations to meet the rising demand for EV infrastructure in South East Queensland. The support and resources available at The Precinct will help us refine our strategies, connect with key stakeholders, and expand our team. We’re excited to continue driving innovation in this rapidly growing industry” Nyambuya stated.
