Sydney-based technology investment firm Tidal Ventures has made a strategic move to base their Queensland HQ at The Precinct in Brisbane and the outcomes have been nothing short of amazing.
Since making the move Tidal has made waves in Queensland, rapidly embedding themselves into the local start-up ecosystem and meeting with over 200 Queensland founders in the first 60 days.
Tidal’s expansion to Queensland comes as a result of the Queensland Venture Capital Development Fund (QVCDF), a state-backed initiative that provides up to $20 million in matched funding for selected VC firms.
Their arrival was further celebrated by hosting the EOFY drinks in collaboration with Cake Equity, FiT, and Planet Startup—an event that brought together top finance leaders, firm partners, and CFOs, signalling Tidal’s commitment to fostering a thriving entrepreneurial community.
Fee Lal, Senior Investment Associate and Atlassian alumnus, reflects on the whirlwind start Tidal has had in Queensland.
“Working out of The Precinct has been incredible. It’s the epicentre for Queensland’s start-ups, buzzing with energy and opportunities. Last week alone was packed with coffees, events, and networking, with highlights like the UQ Ventures Momentum Accelerator dinner and the Queensland AI Hub’s pitch night.”
Ms Lal is genuinely excited about the thriving ecosystem in Queensland. With Brisbane now being the most interstate migrated city in Australia, she’s observing a significant return of talent to the region. Where once founders might have relocated to other cities in search of funding, many are now choosing to build and grow their ventures in Queensland. A key insight Fee has gained from her conversations with local founders is their deep domain knowledge within the industries they operate in.
Tidal Ventures, with its specialisation in B2B SaaS, is particularly focused on supporting founders who are building Vertical AI solutions. Ms. Lal defines Vertical AI as “the combination of proprietary datasets and subject matter expertise to create industry specific AI models. These are developed to address the unique challenges and opportunities of a particular industry.”
Given the deep domain expertise of founders in the region, Ms. Lal believes that Queensland is uniquely positioned to produce some of the best Vertical AI/SaaS companies in Australia.
Eager to connect with emerging talent in Queensland, Ms Lal will be attending upcoming events including Something Tech and Female Founders ConnectX.
Tidal’s move to the Precinct represents more than just geographical expansion; it’s a commitment to nurturing the next generation of tech innovators in Queensland.
END.
